Competitive categories in the Tony Awards, by year

There are currently 24 competitive categories at the Tony Awards. With the exception of the "orchestrations" category which began in 1997 and revival categories in 1980, every other category has been in play in some form since the inception of the Tony Awards in the late 1940s.

Best Sound Design of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Musical will be back next season (2017-18). The last nominations in sound were in 2014.
